Vera’s quotables

If you know Vera, or you’ve been following us for a while, you’d already know she’s full of funny and that she says some of the most hilarious things. I’ll let her words humour you…

One day we were playing this silly childhood game called 老鹰捉小鸡 (literally, eagle catches the chicks). There’s a role in the game called 母鸡, or mother hen, and she’s supposed to protect the “chicks” from the “eagle” by sheltering them from its reach.

Halfway through the game when I was the *ahem* mother hen, Vera blurted out these words exuberantly.

“我要做老鸡!”

We almost died laughing.

(For non-Chinese readers, she basically said she wanted to be an old chicken instead of mother hen. And yes, there IS a difference.)

One balmy evening, after daddy turned on the air-con…

Vera: “Hey, why on air-con every day huh? Waste battery you know!”

(Duracell-powered aircon, anyone?)

~~~~~
Another time, we were huddling together to pray for her brother to recover quickly from his HFMD. We asked Vera to pray. This was what she said:
“Dear God,
Please take away JJ’s hand foot mouth dessert.
Amen.”
I think if her brother knows that his dear sister prayed for God to take away his dessert, he would probably cry.
Children are the best stress-relievers sometimes…I choose to think that she inherited her rocking funny genes from her dad (which was partially why I actually fell for him and got hitched).
This weekend, may all the funnies drive away whatever tensions you may have, and may you find lots to laugh about with your spouse, your children, your friends, or even God (I think He has a good sense of humour too). Have a happy weekend!
Fun facts about body odour
Body odour isn’t your typical dinner topic. Talking about it makes people squirm and smelling it can sometimes lead to fainting or gagging. Reading this probably makes you want to sniff yourself and check, or hop into the shower for a good scrub anyway.
Do you know which is the smelliest part of the human body?
Answer: Your feet.
One foot has more than 250,000 sweat glands and these produce more than a pint of sweat each day. That works out to nearly a gallon of sweat every week! (That’s just for one foot by the way.)
Here are some other interesting facts about odour:
Fact #1 – Sweat itself is not smelly. When we sweat, we attract bacteria on our skin, which combines with the sweat and produces bad smells. So blame embarrassing smells on the bacteria!
Fact #2 – Kids never smell bad. The only exception is when they just did a poop. For kids, body odour is rarely a problem until puberty strikes, and their sweat glands are activated. However, kids may have a problem with stinky feet, since it is the area that sweats most, and because feet are usually wrapped up and get to “breathe” less.
Fact #3 Smell is one of the first senses a newborn learns to use. Newborns have a keen sense of smell. Studies have shown that within the first few days of life, babies will develop a preference for the smell of their own mother, especially to her breast milk.
Fact #4 – No one else in the world has your scent. Yes, you can go ahead and celebrate your scent. There’s no one else with the same smell as you!
Fact #5 – Smells play a part in the courtship process. Scientists have found that a person’s unique scent is one of the major factors in physical attraction between men and women. Some have even gone as far as to say that a person’s scent can be more of an influence to the relationship’s success than physical appearances. Believe it or not?
Fact #6 – Your diet can influence your odour. Here are some foods that may cause body odour. Since sweat actually removes toxins from your body, including those generated through the foods you eat, then it also makes sense to cut down the amount of toxins in our body by eating healthier.
Tips for preventing body odour:
  1. Taking a shower is an obvious and immediate solution, but it isn’t always enough to get rid of strong odour, or to prevent it from returning. You may need to use an antibacterial shower gel to eliminate bacteria on the surface of your skin.
  2. Use a loofah or bath towel to clean yourself thoroughly in the areas where you are more likely to sweat often.
  3. Wear clean and loose clothing with natural fibres such as cotton, to allow your skin to breathe.
  4. Eat a well-balanced diet.
 Lifebuoy is committed to fighting body odour by educating people about hygiene and encouraging a healthy lifestyle.
A toddler’s prayer
We have begun praying together with Vera for quite a while now. And Vera has started to echo whatever we pray.
One particular evening, things started to get quite peculiar halfway through.
Here are the words to our prayer…
~~~

Dear God,

Dear God,

Thank you for the wonderful day we had.

Thank you for the wonderful day we had.

Thank you for the time we can spend together as a family.

Thank you for the time we can spend together with our family.

Thank you that Vera was such a good girl today,

Thank you that Vera was such a good girl today,

and JJ was such a good boy.

and JJ was such a good boy.

We pray for the week ahead.

We pray for the week on the head.

[Daddy and I swallow back our chuckles.]

We ask, Lord, that you be with us.

We ask, Lord, that you play with us.

[Laughing out loud now…]

In Jesus’ name, Amen!

In Jesus’ name, Amen!

~~~
Isn’t it funny how this goes to show what the important things really are to a 3 year old? Anyway, I think God’s pretty cool about it, after all, He created us with the desire to have fun, right?
Though I’m still not quite sure about the praying on the head part. Maybe it’s an expression of her desire to learn head-stands?
Have you had any funny conversations with your child lately?
Vera wear papa shirt
This morning, for the first time, Vera asked to wear her daddy’s shirt.
papa shirt
We’ve all seen little girls trying to look all grown up like their mummies by putting on their dresses / shoes / lipstick, etc.
But this little girl chose to wear her dad’s shirt.
And I swear, I had nothing to do with it.  And this is NOT a publicity stunt for my blog. I was just going about trying to get everyone ready to leave the house so that we could get to church on time.
Then suddenly, she appeared, with a big grin on her face, in papa’s stripey-blue shirt.
View the video to hear why she did this..
You know I could be jealous, but I’m choosing to look at it this way. She must love and look up to her daddy so much that she wants to be like him…to the extent of dressing like him.
This must be her biggest compliment to dad ever. And I’m totally cool with that. 🙂
