Little Lessons - and it’s a wrap

I’m wrapping up Little Lessons for 2013. (But we’ll be back in 2014, after confinement, or so.)

Here, I’d like to highlight 3 posts that touched my heart, and reminded me of something important.

1) Thoughts on what truly matters - Little Blue Bottle

Many times, we try to build elaborate structures in our lives - spacious homes, fanciful parties, dazzling careers. When what matters most, is often the simple and intangible - a child’s trust, a hug from the husband, a promise of faithfulness.

May we always invest our time and our energies in what truly matters, and cling to what will last - that which moth and rust will not eat away.

2) Seeing the world through your eyes - A Juggling Mom

I have to shut that critic in me who’s always ever so quick to pass judgment when I see her doing things differently. Maybe I should learn to see the world through her eyes to see the beauty even when it’s not something I’m used to.

3) Don’t scream at your child - Mummy Wee

The first time you scream at them, it seems to work like a miracle. They are momentarily stunned and would be on their best behaviour for the rest of the day. I would finish yelling at them, then send them all to bed (it didn’t matter what the time was). They would promptly fall asleep, probably in fear, and I got my hour of peace.

Subsequently, they got so used to my screaming that they don’t fall in line immediately anymore. What happens? I have to scream even louder thinking that somehow what I was trying to say would get into their little heads if I yelled loud enough. It came to a point where I lost my voice every few weeks, and I would be even more frustrated when I couldn’t say anything to them. In the end, the screaming didn’t work anymore, and in their hearts, they were probably thinking to themselves, “here she goes again”.

And here are two of my own favourite lessons I leart:

1) Kindness makes the world go round (also known as the one where I’m deeply humbled by a small act of great love.)

2) Parents need to be good listeners

Parenting is a steep and curvy learning journey…But mistakes are part of our everyday, and the important thing is to learn from them.

I hope you enjoy these little lessons too. Happy weekend!
