I recently attended a baby massage class with Nouri Face and Body Concepts, and decided to share the video I took of Val massaging Josh so that you can learn more about infant massage.
I never knew that massage could actually work to help babies sleep better. I experienced this first-hand the other day when I was practising my newly learnt massage strokes on Josh before his noon nap. He was fed and calm, so I started with his legs, and worked my way to his back.
He likes his legs to be massaged for some reason, and doesn’t quite like it when I massage his hands. (We think it’s because he likes to be “hands-free” so he can wave them about and put his fingers into his mouth.) I finished with some downward strokes on his belly, to help relieve any wind in his tummy. Then I left the room.
The curtains were drawn and the room was dim. I thought I’d go pick up his favourite lovey (his smelly bean pillow) from the living room and come in to breastfeed him a little more, to help him go down for his nap. When I returned, I saw his eyelids were slowly closing. So I quickly bent down (out of his view) and just quietly observed him from the side of the bed. He did a few leg-jerks, and I was worried he would stir himself up again. But after a few minutes, he was out.
I was amazed and obviously wanted to jump for joy. (Yes! His first time soothing himself to sleep. And even without the pacifier. Woohoo!) That episode motivated me to keep on massaging him every evening, before bedtime.
I hope you learn something from this video, and if it works for your baby too, I’d love to hear from you on how it went!
